Welcome to the experience that is Peggy Burke
BIO
Born in 1935 in Chatham County, North Carolina to Elsie Mae and Johnnie Burke, Peggy
began life in a simple Christian farm community. She helped on the farm while attending
school, and the Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ every Sunday.
Peggy earned her Batchelor of Science degree in Home Economics at UNCG, in 1957. After
working for the NC Agricultural Extension Services Department for ten years as a field agent,
Peggy decided to change directions and embrace her longing to express herself in art by
going to Chicago and acquiring a Certificate of Fine Art in 1969, in painting and sculpture.
She furthered her art training by taking graduate studies at East Carolina University,
Greenville, NC, in 1971, and finished that degree in 1972 at UNCG, in Greensboro, NC.
Peggy has exhibited and sold sculpture, painting, drawings and ceramics in group shows,
private shows, as well as works in private, permanent and corporate collections (see link at
top left: Body of Work ).
If you will survey the titles of her sculpture, you will find names like “The Spirit of Life”,
“Ethereal”, “Pax Vabiscum” (Latin for “Peace be with you”) “Emerging” and “Ascension”. As
one gazes upon Peggy’s work, the intended serenity and peacefulness is there.
In Peggy’s words:
“I have asked (or prayed) for many years that my sculpture would
serve as a healer for the earth. I like my work to be seen by people who
appreciate the healing and loving energy in art. I would love for my
work to be in any location where it can serve the earth and all
Beings. Balance and harmony are needed all over the world.”
In April 2006, Peggy moved to an assisted living apartment in North Greensboro, NC, where
she continues to paint and work on her sculpture ideas. In November 2006, she approved
four of her maquettes (a preliminary 3-dimensional model of an intended sculpture) for
fabrication. These newest sculptures are featured under "Meditative Series" and we hope
you will preview and consider these works for your environment.
